City St. George’s, University of London.

UK Council for Clinical Communication in Undergraduate Medical Education Conference

We invite you to share your learning from your stories on the journey towards mastery.

The UK Council for Clinical Communication (UKCCC) in Undergraduate Medical Education supports and promotes effective teaching in clinical communication.  We are delighted to announce that it will be hosting the upcoming national conference in undergraduate clinical communication teaching, led jointly by the newly merged City St. George’s, University of London and the UK Council for Clinical Communication (UKCCC), in the Northampton Suite, University Building, City St. George’s, Clerkenwell Campus, EC1V 0HB.

This two-day conference is aimed at all involved in the delivery of undergraduate clinical communication education including tutors, simulated patients, patient educators and students. While the emphasis is on undergraduate medical education, our experience is that the day will also be very helpful for those who are involved in postgraduate training.

The theme of this conference is ‘Moving Towards Mastery – Learning from Miscommunication’ and we invite you to share your learning from your stories on the journey towards mastery.

The intention is to share innovative and best practice within UK clinical communication education. In the past, participants have enjoyed a range of educational material from research presentations to developmental workshops and have shared innovative teaching ideas. Work in progress as well as completed work is welcome.

To ensure there is quality time for meaningful conversations and sharing ideas, places are limited.

Call for abstracts – deadline extended!

The Call for Abstracts opened on Wednesday 13 Nov 2024.  We have extended the deadline for abstract submission to Wednesday 22 Jan 2025 at 23.59.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with the organising committee at UKCCCconference2025@sgul.ac.uk.

The organising committee is looking for abstracts for oral presentations, workshops, roundtable discussions and posters on topics focusing on the learning and teaching of clinical communication within undergraduate medical education. We are especially interested in staff-student partnerships, assessment of clinical communication, academic support within the context of communication skills and challenging biases.

We invite you to submit abstracts in the form of:

Drawing of a pair of hands creating charts alongside a cup of coffee, a notebook, computer keyboard and a pair of glasses.

1. Posters and/or oral presentations

Submissions are open for ideas and original research on contemporary educational practice related to the conference theme “Moving Towards Mastery – Learning from Miscommunication”. Abstracts should provide a clear outline of the work, relevant background, research results and/or evaluation findings and relevant conclusions. Work in progress and new ideas will be considered for acceptance. Poster format details will be sent to you should your abstract be selected.

Abstract submission length: Up to 350 words

Presentation time: 15 minutes (10 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for questions)

Please note: Not all poster authors will be invited to do an oral presentation because slots are limited

2. Workshops

Workshops are intended to provide participants with a chance to learn or enhance skills/ techniques with an overarching aim of broadening the perspective of their attendees. They should be designed to introduce a rigorous framework for learning a new area or to provide ‘hands-on’ experience for the participants. Submissions will be selected on the basis of the objectives and relevance of the workshop.  Abstracts should include a clear description of the workshop objectives.

Abstract submission length: Up to 350 words

Workshop time: 60 minutes

4. Hosting a Roundtable Discussion Group

Round table discussions provide opportunities for open facilitated discussion and creativity in an informal setting on a specific topic. These are usually best suited to debateable/topical issues.  Attendees will organise themselves around a table(s) where questions are posed about the selected topic. Facilitators will help the discussion and debate each side of the argument to bring out opportunities for learning. At the end of the session, the facilitators will sum up the arguments and main points. Abstracts should include a clear description of the roundtable discussion, objectives, as well as the proposed questions to debate.

Abstract submission length: Up to 350 words

Roundtable Discussion Groups running time: 60 minutes

How to submit an abstract

Authors must complete the ‘Call for Abstracts’ form  https://forms.office.com/e/X46Wfn05dp  which asks you to email your 350-word abstract in PDF format to UKCCCconference2025@sgul.ac.uk.  The scientific committee will review the submitted abstracts and, if successful, you will be notified by email.
